the U.S. Military Operation in the Red Sea and an Agreement Between Sanaa and Riyadh to Resolve Salary and Economic Crises

The former UN envoy to Yemen, Jamal Benomar, made a series of statements regarding the U.S.-led naval military operation in the Red Sea and the agreement that was on its way to being implemented between the Sanaa government, or as he called them, “the Houthis,” and Saudi Arabia.

Jamal Benomar, who served as the special envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Yemen from 2011 to 2015, said in an interview on “Russia Today” channel, “The Americans, along with the British, have started militarizing the Red Sea and amassing an arsenal of ships and weapons there for airstrikes against Yemen and Houthi positions, and this has not been effective,” adding that this “will push the Houthis to hold on to their position, which is what we are seeing in recent days.”

He noted that there is “absolute support in Yemen for the Palestinian cause,” pointing out that “the Houthis have withstood the war waged by Saudi Arabia against them, which aimed to bring its loyalists back to Sanaa.”

He continued, “The Houthis have historically benefited from the mistakes of their enemies, whether local or international. The U.S. erred by underestimating the Houthis’ capability when they took over Amran, and the Americans made a mistake by encouraging Saudi Arabia to go to war against the Houthis, which was also a fatal error and this war has failed.”

Benomar explained that Saudi Arabia had reached a roadmap with the “Houthis” for a solution in Yemen concerning humanitarian issues, salaries, and the economic situation. “This was a positive development, but recent events might complicate the situation in Yemen significantly.”

The former UN envoy to Yemen considered the U.S. coalition a “failure” and that “Houthi operations in the Red Sea have escalated, and today there are advanced weapons.” He confirmed that “Houthi operations are linked to Gaza in solidarity with their brothers in Palestine, and they will not abandon them. They have affirmed that their support for the Palestinian cause is part of their creed and political plan.”
